Profile

Current position: Home / Personal Profile

Kuo-lung Yu holds a Ph.D. in International Politics from Peking University, where he also completed his postdoctoral research in Political Science. He is currently Professor at the School of International Relations and Deputy Director of the Institute of Psychoculturology at Huaqiao University.

A pioneering psychoculturologist, Prof. Yu is dedicated to constructing a holistic knowledge system that challenges the reductionist paradigms of mainstream Western social sciences. He focuses on integrating psychological mechanisms, cultural systems, and social structures into a unified analytical framework. As the originator of the “Relational Ascription Theory of Ethnic Identity” and the “Social Structure Continuum Theory,” Prof. Yu provides new methodological tools for bridging micro-level interactions and macro-level social structures. His comparative research primarily focuses on Chinese, American, Japanese, and Hindu civilizations.

He is the author of the landmark monograph The Paradigm Revolution of Francis L. K. Hsu: Theories and Methods for the Comparative Study of Literate Civilizations (Springer Nature, 2026). His other major works including Psychoculturology: Studies and Applications of Francis L. K. Hsu’s Theories (2010), A Study on Francis L. K. Hsu’s Comparative Theory of Literate Civilizations (2014), A Survey of the Influence of Chinese Culture in India (2019), and The Japanese and the Japanese State: A Psychoculturological Perspective (2021). In addition, he has published extensively on topics such as soft power, international relations theory, and Japanese studies.
