Experimental study of square CFBT stub columns under axial compression

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental results of square concrete-filled bimetallic tubular (CFBT) stub columns under axial compression. The bimetallic tubes for the CFBT columns herein had an outer stainless steel layer and an inner carbon steel layer. Ten CFBT stub columns and two conventional concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) counterparts using carbon steel tubes were tested to failure under axial compression. The test parameters considered included the wall thickness of the stainless steel tube layer and the cube compressive strength of concrete. Based on the test results, the failure mode, load versus deformation response, and load-carrying capacity of the CFBT columns were studied and compared with those of the CFST counterparts.
