Performance of concrete-filled bimetallic tube T-joints subjected to axial loads on webs

Abstract:Stainless carbon steel bimetallic tubes are a promising alternative to enhance the durability of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) structures in corrosive environments. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental and numerical investigation into the axial tensile and compressive behavior of T-joints with concrete-filled bimetallic tubes (CFBTs) as chords. Experimental studies on 12 T-joint specimens were conducted, with key parameters including concrete infill, web member type (I-section, SHS, or CHS), and loading type. The tests revealed distinct failure modes: chord face plastification for empty chords and web member failure for concrete-filled chords. A finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed and validated against the experimental results. A subsequent parametric study quantified the influence of the chord diameter-to-thickness ratio (D/t) and web-to-chord diameter ratio (β). It was found that β and the chord diameter-to-thickness ratio (D/t) are the most influential parameters. Based on the mechanistic analysis, a design model is proposed for predicting the joint capacity.
