摘要:This paper presents the finite element (FE) analysis on axial compressive behavior of innovative concrete filled bimetal tubular (CFBT) columns. The cross section of the bimetal tube is composed of an outer layer made of stainless steel and an inner layer made of carbon steel. Three dimensional FE models for circular CFBT short columns subjected to axial compression were established using the FE software ABAQUS. After being verified with existing experimental data of concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, the FE models were used to study the failure mode, load versus deformation relationship, axial strength, and efficiency of the CFBT columns. Analytical results show that the composite action between the concrete core and the bimetal tube in a CFBT column is as effective as that in a CFST column. The gap between the two layers of the bimetal tube has an obvious influence on the failure mode and axial strength of CFBT columns. When the gap ratio is larger than 0.5%, the corresponding CFBT column exhibits a strength reduction of more than 5%. The effect of coefficient of friction between the stainless steel and the carbon steel on the axial compressive behavior of circular CFBT short columns is negligible.
